The pattern. When Rich is acquiring grounding material (books, primary sources, research documents) that is directly relevant to a methodology or analysis I’m about to produce, I should WAIT for the material to arrive + be absorbed before writing the methodology. Producing methodology first is:

  1. Self-marking — I generate from my training-data priors, not from the actual authoritative sources on the topic
  2. Wasteful of the grounding material — Rich paid for + selected the books specifically to inform the research; writing first makes them reference-after-the-fact instead of the actual foundation
  3. Lower quality output — my training data reflects up-to-2024 knowledge with unknown biases; current authoritative books reflect current domain thinking with vetted authority
  4. Harder to fix later — revising spines informed by books means re-writing; waiting means writing right the first time

Example: Z.1-Z.5 (April 2026). Rich commissioned a 15-jurisdiction foundation re-opening with synthetic adversarial panels grounded in real published material. Before the library was indexed, I wrote Z.1 (questions register), Z.2 (evaluation criteria), Z.3 (adversarial panel methodology), Z.4 (regulator corpus plan), Z.5 (legislative replay plan) — all from my training-data priors.

The library then landed with 19 books including Kleppmann DDIA 2e, Allemang Semantic Web 3e, Lowagie Entreprenerd, Khononov Learning DDD, Perrin/Broda Implementing Data Mesh, Sanderson Data Contracts, Itelman/Viotti Unifying Business Data Code, Smith JSON Mastery — exactly the authoritative grounding material Z.2/Z.3 reference abstractly but don’t cite concretely.

Rich’s response: “I believe Z.1 to Z.5 would have been written better if you had waited and used the library.”

Correct. The spines need revision after library-absorption.

How to apply:

  1. Before producing methodology / analysis / recommendations, ask: “is grounding material arriving?” If yes, wait for it. Specifically check:

    • Are books being acquired?
    • Are primary sources being catalogued?
    • Are subagent research threads producing evidence I should use?
    • Is the user doing research in parallel that feeds this?

  2. Time-pressure is a false signal. The instinct to produce “progress quickly” leads to premature methodology. Grounded methodology takes longer but produces higher-quality output and avoids rework.

  3. Training-data priors are weak evidence for methodology design. My priors reflect up-to-2024 thinking with unknown biases. Current authoritative books reflect current domain thinking with vetted authority + practitioner validation. Use the books.

  4. If I’m uncertain whether grounding material is coming, ask. “I’m about to write X — is there material you’d like me to absorb first?” is a legitimate question even under Rich’s general “don’t ask permission” discipline, because the alternative is produce-then-rewrite.

  5. Waiting is the right move even under time pressure. Rich’s explicit direction 17 April 2026 was “don’t worry about time — it is what it is.” Time pressure in Phase Z was my invention, not Rich’s requirement.

The meta-pattern across all five: I rush to produce. Rich’s decades-long research requires pausing — for evidence, for options, for grounding material, for sequential discipline. My instinct to move fast is frequently at odds with the research method the work actually requires.

Why it matters. Foundation decisions for a 20-40 year standard cannot rest on my 2024-era training data priors. They must rest on current authoritative published thinking from practitioners and researchers actually working in these domains. Every unread book in the library is evidence I didn’t use. Every abstract Z.2 criterion is a place where Kleppmann / Allemang / Ford / Huyen would have said something sharper.
